Alfred University is hosting the 2010 Empire 8 Conference softball championship tournament, May 7-9 at Alfred State College.

The four-team double-elimination tournament will begin Friday, May 7, and conclude Saturday, May 8. Sunday, May 9 is being reserved as a rain date.

Alfred is the top seed in the tournament; Ithaca is seeded second; St. John Fisher is seeded third; and RIT is seeded fourth. The tournament winner earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA championships.

Note to visitors: Seating at the softball field is limited. Please bring your own chairs.

Following is the tournament schedule:

Friday, May 7

• Game 1: No. 2 Ithaca vs. No. 3 St. John Fisher, 10 a.m.
• Game 2: No. 1 Alfred vs. No. 4 RIT, Noon
• Game 3: Loser of Game 1 vs. Loser of Game 2, 2 p.m.
• Game 4: Winner of Game 1 vs. Winner of Game 2, 4 p.m.

Saturday, MAY 8

• Game 5: Winner of Game 3 vs. Loser of Game 4, 11 a.m.
• Game 6: Winner of Game 4 vs. Winner of Game 5, 1 p.m.
• Game 7: If Necessary, 3 p.m.

Rain, wind halt Empire 8 softball title game

Rain and heavy gusting wind forced the suspension of Saturday afternoon’s Empire 8 Conference softball championship game between Ithaca and host Alfred University. Officials stopped the game with Alfred batting in the top of the third and two outs, with the score tied 2-2. The contest will resume Sunday, May 9, at 2 p.m.
