TUSCON, AZ — The Alfred University softball team split two games Thursday in Tuscon, AZ, where the Saxons are on a 12-game Spring Break trip.
AU (3-5) defeated Marian (WI) University, 5-3, then lost to Dickinson (PA) College, 11-3 in five innings.
In the win against Marian, freshman Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) was 1-for-2 with three RBIs (two-run double, sacrifice fly) to lead the Saxons’ offense. Junior Stephanie Argello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) (3-for-4) and freshman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) ( 2-for-4) each scored a run and had one RBI; and junior Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) (double) and freshman Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Mackenzie Miller (Newport, OR/Newport) each scored a run.
Sophomore Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) earned the pitching win for the Saxons, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six over 4 2/3 innings. Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) got the save, tossing 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out one.
In the loss to Dickinson, freshman Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) had two hits and scored twice and Passuite had two hits and drove in a run. Picini hit a double and freshman Patricia Burdick (Lockport, NY/Lockport) drove in two runs.
Sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) started and took the pitching loss for the Saxons, allowing eight earned runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings. Muller allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in one inning and O’Sullivan allowed an unearned run on three hits in two innings.
The Saxons have two games Friday – against Chatham (PA) at 3:30 p.m. and Concordia (TX) at 6 p.m. – and conclude their Spring Break trip with two on Saturday – against Trinity (TX) at 11 a.m. and Jamestown (ND) at 1:30 p.m.
