TUSCON, AZ – The Alfred University softball team split two contests Wednesday morning during Spring Break games played in Tuscon, AZ. Alfred lost, 7-5, to Texas Lutheran before bouncing back to shut out Sul Ross (TX) State, 7-0.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) allowed three hits and struck out four to earn the shutout win in the win over Sul Ross as the Saxons improved to 2-4 on the season. AU has played half of its 12-game Spring Break slate, which runs through Saturday, March 16.
Freshman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the Saxon bats. Junior Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs; freshman Nicole Maher(Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) drove in two runs; and freshman Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and junior Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
In the loss to Texas Lutheran, Maher had three hits and drove in three and freshman Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) had three hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored once. Torchia went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Passuite scored twice.
Sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, NY/Towanda) took the pitching loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 13 hits while striking out two over six innings.
AU plays Marian (WI) at 9 a.m. Thursday (March 13), then plays Dickinson (PA) at 11 a.m. The Saxons have two games Friday – against Chatham (PA) at 3:30 p.m. and Concordia (TX) at 6 p.m. – and conclude their Spring Break trip with two on Saturday – against Trinity (TX) at 11 a.m. and Jamestown (ND) at 1:30 p.m.
Maressa Mistretta The senior second baseman from Shirley, NY, drove in what proved to be the winning run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning of the softball team’s 6-1 victory over Centenary in the first round of the ECAC South Championship softball tournament.
