NORTH CREEK, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9 and 10, at Gore Mountain. Each AU squad placed second out of five teams, their best team finishes of the season.
In Saturday’s giant slalom, senior Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) placed third to lead the AU men, who took second in the GS as a team. Sophomore Jeremy Osak (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was seventh; senior Bob Cilino (Bath, NY/Haverling) was eighth; freshman Bryce Lloyd (Hartland, VT/Sharon Academy) was ninth; and freshman Cody Towner (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 12th.
The AU women took second in Saturday’s GS. Freshman Holly Mager (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) led the Alfred women, taking fourth. Senior Claire Dvorak (Tully, NY/Tully) was fifth; junior Rebecca Spitz (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) was sixth; freshman Kaitlyn Tepper (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was eighth; and junior Dianne Mattar (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) was ninth.
The Saxon men were fourth in Sunday’s slalom. Barton was fifth in the slalom and took third in the individual combined standings. Towner was 15th; Cilino was 16; and Lloyd was 17th.
Mager was Alfred’s top skier in the women’s slalom, placing third and leading AU to a second-place team finish. Dvorak was sixth; Mattar was seventh; Tepper was eighth; and Spitz was ninth.
Alfred is in action next on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16 and 17, at Labrador Mountain.
Maressa Mistretta The senior second baseman from Shirley, NY, drove in what proved to be the winning run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning of the softball team’s 6-1 victory over Centenary in the first round of the ECAC South Championship softball tournament.
