AU swimming and diving teams end dual meet season with losses to Ithaca

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded their dual meet seasons Saturday afternoon at home against Ithaca. The visiting Bombers swept the meets, defeating the AU men, 184-103, and the Saxon women, 197-98.

 

The Alfred men (4-3) got individual race wins from sophomore Dave Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville), in the 100-yard freestyle (48.68); senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), in the 100 butterfly (55.10); and sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), in the 200 individual medley (2:03.02).

 

Senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:33.07) and 500 free (5:05.83); Toth was second in the 200 free (1:48.63); Coombes was second in the 100 backstroke (56.00); and freshman Dustin Whyte (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) was second in the 200 butterfly (2:09.50).

 

The team of sophomore David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Toth, Coombes and junior Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) took first in the 200 free relay (1:28.63).

 

Freshmen Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) and Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon) each earned two wins to pace the Saxon women (4-5). Watson took first in the 100 fly (1:02.97) and 500 free (5:26.37) and McRill won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.91) and 50-yard breaststroke (33.50).

 

Sophomore Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) won the 50 free (25.79) and took second in the 50 backstroke (29.96) and 100 free (57.09); and senior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth) was second in the 1,000 free (11:45.95).

 

The AU men’s and women’s teams are now idle until the Empire 8 Conference/Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championships, Feb. 20-23, at Ithaca College.
