ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men’s basketball team dropped a close 67-61 decision to visiting St. John Fisher in Empire 8 Conference action Tuesday evening in the McLane Center.
AU (4-13, 1-7 Empire 8) led 35-32 at the halftime break, as the Saxons shot 44 percent from the floor, making five of 11 three-point shots. Fisher responded after intermission, connecting on five long-range shots and holding Alfred to 25-percent shooting as the Cardinals outscored the host team, 35-26, in the second frame.
Fisher (10-8, 5-4) outrebounded Alfred, 42-32, helping to offset 19 turnovers.
Senior guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) netted a game-high 21 points, sinking three of his team’s six three-point goals, to pace the Saxons. Sophomore guard Tim Pacheco (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) added 10 points and senior guard Tim Costello (Windsor, NY/Windsor) had nine. Junior forward Michael Branche (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Tyler Hart led three Fisher players in double figures with 18 points. Thad Wier had 15 and Chaz Lott 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Alfred is in action next on Friday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m. at Nazareth.
Maressa Mistretta The senior second baseman from Shirley, NY, drove in what proved to be the winning run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning of the softball team’s 6-1 victory over Centenary in the first round of the ECAC South Championship softball tournament.
