AU ski teams open season at Toggenburg

FABIUS, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams opened their 2013 season Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and 20, at Toggenburg.

           

The AU men took fifth in both the giant slalom and slalom to place fifth overall out of seven teams competing. The Saxon women took seventh in the GS and fourth in the slalom and also finished fifth overall.

 

In Saturday’s giant slalom, senior Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) placed eighth in the GS to pace the AU men. Sophomore Jeremy Osak (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was 18th; freshman Cody Towner (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 20th; and senior Bob Celino (Bath, NY/Haverling) was 23rd.

 

Osak was 14th in Sunday’s slalom; Barton was 17th; Towner was 18th; freshman Bryce Lloyd (Hartland, VT/Sharon Academy) was 22nd; and Cilino was 25th.

 

Freshman Holly Mager (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) led the Alfred women in the giant slalom, taking 15th. Freshman Kaitlyn Tepper (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), junior Rebecca Spitz (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) and junior Dianne Mattar (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) were 22nd, 23rd and 24th, respectively.

 

Spitz was Alfred’s top women’s skier in the slalom, taking 16th, while senior Claire Dvorak (Tully, NY/Tully) was right behind in 17th.

 

Alfred is in action next on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26 and 27, at Bristol Mountain in Bristol, NY.

Maressa Mistretta The senior second baseman from Shirley, NY, drove in what proved to be the winning run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning of the softball team’s 6-1 victory over Centenary in the first round of the ECAC South Championship softball tournament.
