ALFRED, NY-  The Alfred University women’s basketball team overwhelmed SUNY Canton, in a 63-53 victory, Tuesday evening at McLane Center.

AU controlled the pace of the game from the start going on a 10-0 run around the 8 minute mark of the first half making the score 21-9.  The lead increased to 28-16 by intermission. 

Canton would only come as close as four points in the second half, outscoring AU 37-35.  For the game, Alfred shot 34 percent from the field, 18 percent from beyond the arc, and 50 percent from the free throw line.

Sophomore guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led Alfred with a game-high 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Junior forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) (seven rebounds) and freshman forward Hailey Sick (Dansville, NY/Dansville) (six rebounds) both scored 10 points apiece. Junior guard Rachael Stedman (Hamburg, NY/Springville Griffith) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, respectively. 

AU (5-10, 0-6 Empire 8) resumes Empire 8 play on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. against Ithaca College.
