ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University English equestrian team took second place at a show it hosted Saturday, Dec. 8, at the AU Equestrian Center.
Sophomore Casey Duncan (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) led the Saxons with a win in intermediate equitation on the flat and a second-place finish in novice equitation over fences. With the runner-up finish, AU maintains its lead in the Regional High Point Team standings.
Other AU riders to win events were: sophomore Olivia Costich (Penfield, NY/Harley School) in open equitation over fences; freshman Stephanie Zimicki (Lockport, NY/St. Mary’s) and freshman Matt Chabot (Utica, NY/Notre Dame), both in novice equitation over fences; and freshman Cassandra McCarn (Gouverneur, NY/Gouverneur) in beginner walk-trot-canter.
Senior Amelia Keyes (Webster, NY/Penfield) was second in intermediate equitation on the flat; senior Sarah Schron (Whitehall, OH/ECofT) was second in novice equitation on the flat; sophomore Alexandra Gerbec (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) was second in advanced walk-trot-canter; and junior Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) was second in walk trot.
Other top riders for AU included: junior Amalia Maslen (Chardon, OH/Andrews Osborne), third in open equitation on the flat junior Amanda Pellino (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream North) and sophomore Artsede Scarseth (Berkshire, NY/Ithaca), both third in advanced walk-trot-canter; freshman Joelene Lathrop (Beldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), third in beginner walk-trot-canter; and senior Lauren Carli (East Bethany, NY/Alexander), third in walk-trot.
The AU English team is in action next on Feb. 17 at Cornell.
Maressa Mistretta The senior second baseman from Shirley, NY, drove in what proved to be the winning run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning of the softball team’s 6-1 victory over Centenary in the first round of the ECAC South Championship softball tournament.
