MORRISVILLE, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team came up short against Morrisville State, 72-53, in an overtime contest Saturday afternoon.
Alfred held a 50-40 lead over Morrisville heading into halftime. Senior guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) would pace the Saxons, scoring 17 points in the first half to finish with a game-best 24 points. Morrisville State then scored nine unanswered points to make the score 60-59, with 11 minutes remaining in the contest.
AU (2-6, 0-1 Empire 8) and Morrisville would exchange leads throughout the rest of the game as sophomore center Dalton Walsh (Stockton, NY/Cassadaga Valley) (nine points, seven rebounds) tied the game up (72-72) with 1:28 remaining in regular time, to send the game into overtime.
Senior guard Tim Costello (Windsor, NY/Windsor) (four points, three rebounds) hit back-to-back shots to give AU a four-point lead (76-72) with three minutes left in overtime. Morrisville State would then go on to score five unanswered points to earn the 77-76 victory.
For the game, Alfred shot 46 percent from the field, 33 from beyond the 3-point arc, and 58 percent from the foul line.
Senior forward Brett Dennis (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) recorded a double-double, with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior center Steve Lothridge (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) also scored 11 points and pulled down three rebounds.
AU returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 12 p.m. against Framingham (MA) State.
Maressa Mistretta The senior second baseman from Shirley, NY, drove in what proved to be the winning run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning of the softball team’s 6-1 victory over Centenary in the first round of the ECAC South Championship softball tournament.
