ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted a dual meet with SUNY Fredonia Friday evening. The Alfred men edged the visiting Blue Devils, 122-114, while the Saxon women fell, 166-76.
Senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) won three individual events to lead the Alfred men (2-1). He took the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.27), the 100 free (49.62 seconds) and the 500 free (5:08.31). It marked the third time in three dual meets this year that Chapman has won three individual races.
Sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) was Alfred’s other individual event winner, placing first in two races. He won the 400-yard individual medley (4:20.17) and the 100-yard backstroke (55.11 seconds). Sophomores David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Dave Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH) and junior Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.59).
Coombes was second in the 200 free (1:48.45); Sowinski was second in the 50 free (22.50) and 100 free (49.91); and freshman Peter Imus (Hoboken, NJ/St. Peter’s) was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.28). Toth, freshman Jake Olson (Dansville, NY/Dansville), senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and Luke were second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.88).
Freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) led the AU women (0-3) with two wins: in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.50) and the 500 freestyle (5:29.38). She has won eight individual races in the Saxons’ three dual meets this season.
Sophomore Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) was first in the 100 free (56.86) and second in the 200 free (2:06.33); and freshman Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon) was first in the 50 free (25.90) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.87).
The team of Watson, freshman Emma Gromelski (Clark’s Summit, PA/Abington Heights), Behr and McRill were second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.04).
The Alfred women are in action next on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at home against William Smith. The AU men’s and women’s teams compete next together Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Ithaca College Invitational.
Maressa Mistretta The senior second baseman from Shirley, NY, drove in what proved to be the winning run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning of the softball team’s 6-1 victory over Centenary in the first round of the ECAC South Championship softball tournament.
