ROCHESTER, NY – Host RIT edged both the Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in a dual meet Saturday afternoon. RIT beat the AU men, 148-146, and the host Tigers defeated Alfred’s women, 152-144.
Senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) each won three events to pace the AU men, and freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) won three for the AU women.
Watson won the 200-yard free (2:02.31); the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.11); and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.63). Her time in the 100-yard butterfly set a new school record, breaking the previous mark of 1:01.18 set by Jessica Picarella in 1999.
Chapman took the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:26.80); the 200-yard free (1:49.37); and the 500-yard free (4:57.64). Toth won the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.38); the 200-yard back (2:02.02); and 200-yard individual medley (2:02.08).
Other event winners for the Alfred men were: sophomore Dave Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville), in the 100-yard backstroke (55.97 seconds); junior Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), in the 50-yard free (22.27 seconds) and 100-yard free (48.93); and senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), in the 100-yard butterfly (53.68)
Other event winners for the Saxon women were: freshman Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon), in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.19); junior Cassie Brown (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) in 1-meter diving (212.00) and 3-meter diving (220.30); andsophomore Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), in the 100-yard free (56.26) and 200-yard IM (2:21.77).
Behr, McRill, Watson and freshman Emma Gromelski (Clark’s Summit, PA/Abington Heights) teamed to win the women’s 200-yard medley relay (1:57.90), while sophomore David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Chapman, Coombes and Sowinski took the men’s 200-yard free relay (1:27.58).
The AU men and women re in action next on Friday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. at home against SUNY Fredonia.
