AU swimming and diving teams split with RIT11/06/09

Freshman Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), senior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Kameron Chambliss (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) each won two events to lead the Saxons (2-0, 2-0 Empire 8). Chapman won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:31.49) and 500-yard freestyle (4:59.84); Brisson won the 100-yard freestyle (48.29 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:47.70); and Chambliss won 1-meter and 3-meter diving (265.70 and 238.25 points, respectively).
Senior Greg Pilgrim (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond), in the 100-yard butterfly (55.03 seconds); sophomore Richard Guarniero (New York Mills, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), in the 100-yard backstroke (56.77 seconds); and sophomore Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.00), also won events for the Saxons.
AU swept the relays, with Guarniero, Dolben, junior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) and sophomore Andrew Moragne (Cleveland, OH/University) taking the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.29), and Moragne, juniors Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga), and Brisson winning the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.96).
Olsen was second in the 200-yard free (1:49.57) and 100-yard free (49.22 seconds); junior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) was second in the 1,000-yard free (10:39.96); and Moragne was second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.33 seconds).
Junior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) led the Alfred women (0-2, 0-2 Empire 8) with wins in the 100-yard freestyle (56.07 seconds) and 50-yard free (25.16 seconds).
Other top performers for the AU women were: junior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia), second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:55.52) and 500-yard freestyle (5:47.95); freshman Kylie Smith (Abington, PA/Abington), second in 1-meter diving (173.90 points) and 3-meter diving (181.65); freshman Eda Pallumbi (Windham, ME/Cheverus), third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:17.65) and 500-yard freestyle (6:01.77); and freshman Shelby Remington (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth), second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.00).
The team of Blair, freshmen Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and Nicole Ramos (Freeville, NY/Dryden), and senior Meghan Jones (Beaver Falls, NY/Beaver River) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:48.07).
The Alfred men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. at home against Pitt-Bradford.

Athlete of the week
Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
