Saxons move up in national coaches poll
11/04/09

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University football team is ranked 14th in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III national top-25 poll.

Alfred is 7-0 (3-0 Empire 8) after Saturday’s 51-14 victory over visiting non-conference foe Rochester. The Saxons had been ranked 18th in last week’s AFCA poll.

Alfred is ranked 25th in the latest D3football.com poll. Despite the win over Rochester, Alfred was moved down from the 24th spot it held in last week’s D3football.com poll.

AU plays next at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Empire 8 rival Ithaca. With a win against the Bombers, or at home against Utica in the Saxons’ regular season finale Nov. 14, Alfred would clinch a share of the Empire 8 title and earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championship tournament. A win in both games would give Alfred the Empire 8 crown outright, the Saxons’ first in the conference’s 11-year history.
