Men’s soccer defeated by St. John Fisher, 4-1

PITTSFORD, NY —The Alfred University men’s soccer team was defeated by host St. John Fisher, 5-1, in an Empire 8 Conference contest Saturday night.

Freshman forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) netted a goal for the Saxons on an assist from freshman midfielder Sam Miller (Kinsman, OH/Badger) 6:15 into the game. Luke Lennox made one assist and scored one goal for St. John Fisher. David Garabedian, Mike Redmond and Bryan Canty each also scored a goal to help earn Fisher the win.

St. John Fisher outshot Alfred 25-6. Sophomore goalie Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/ Thunder Ridge) and senior goalie Pat Grimmer (Bath, NY/Haverling) split time in goal for the Saxons. Thorpe made six saves in goal. Adam Durst and Robert Weigand split time in goal for Fisher (8-6-1, 3-3-0 E8). Durst made two saves during the game.

Alfred (5-10-1, 0-6-1 E8) is in action next on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Empire 8 Championships.

Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
