AU places three on Empire 8 women’s tennis all-conference teams10/29/09
ALFRED, NY – Three members of the Alfred University women’s tennis team have been named Empire 8 Conference all-stars, the conference announced this week.
Sophomore Griffin Currie (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) and senior Holly Seidewand (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) were named to the Second Team for singles, while junior Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida) was given honorable mention, also for singles.
Currie, the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year and a Second Team conference all-star as a freshman in 2008, posted a 7-8 singles record this season (3-5 in Empire 8 play. Seidewand went 14-2 in fourth singles (6-2 Empire 8) and repeated as a Second Team selection. McLain, who also earned honorable mention in 2008, was 9-6 in third singles this year (3-5 Empire 8).
Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on teams sponsored by the conference, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” McLain is Alfred’s honoree from the women’s tennis team.
Alfred finished the 2009 season with an 8-7 record (2-6 Empire 8).
