Volleyball team falls to Utica, Ithaca at Empire 8 tournament10/24/09
PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University lost to Utica and Ithaca in the second day of action at the Empire 8 Conference tournament Saturday at Nazareth College. Alfred lost to Utica 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-18) and Ithaca 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-8).
In the match against Utica, senior Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) had seven kills, 15 digs and four blocks to lead AU. Junior Tara Quigley (Blue Point, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) had six kills; junior Erika Huyck (Forestville, NY/Forestville) had 13 digs; sophomore Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had five kills and 14 digs, and senior Emma Walsh (Lancaster, NY/Mt. St. Mary) had 19 assists.
Junior Stephanie Miller (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) had five kills for AU against Ithaca. Crosby had nine kills; Steen four kills, 10 kills and five blocks; and Walsh had 17 assists.
Alfred ends its season with a 3-23 record (0-8 Empire 8).

Athlete of the week
Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
