AU volleyball team drops pair at Empire 8 tournament

PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University lost to St. John Fisher and Stevens Institute of Technology in a pair of Empire 8 Conference tournament matches Friday evening at Nazareth College. Alfred (3-21. 0-6 Empire 8) lost to Fisher 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-10) and Stevens 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-15).

In the match against Fisher, senior Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) had four kills, 13 digs and two blocks to lead AU. Junior Tara Quigley (Blue Point, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) had four kills and two blocks; sophomore Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had three kills and 12 digs, and senior Emma Walsh (Lancaster, NY/Mt. St. Mary) had 12 assists.

Senior Janelle Brandow (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had five kills to pace Alfred against Stevens. Junior Erika Huyck (Forestville, NY/Forestville) had 10 digs, and Walsh had two assists, six digs and a pair of blocks.

Alfred plays the second day of the tournament against Utica at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and Ithaca at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
