AU volleyball team splits pair at Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY — The Alfred University volleyball team beat Utica and lost to host Hartwick in a tri-match Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Saxons (3-18, 0-4 Empire 8) beat Utica three games to two (23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 15-11) and lost in three games to Hartwick (25-10, 25-14, 25-21).

Senior Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) led AU in the match against Utica with 10 kills, 38 digs and five blocks. Sophomore Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 14 kills and 25 digs; senior Janelle Brandow (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had 15 kills; senior Emma Walsh (Lancaster, NY/Mt. St. Mary) had 49 assists; and junior Tara Quigley (Blue Point, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) had 11 kills and seven blocks.

Brandow had six kills and Crosby five kills and five digs to pace AU against Hartwick. Steen had three kills, seven digs and three solo blocks and Walsh added 14 assists.

Alfred plays this weekend, Oct. 23 and 24, at the Empire 8 Conference Tournament at Nazareth. The Lady Saxons play St. John Fisher (4 p.m.) and Stevens (6:30 p.m.) on Friday and Utica (9:30 a.m.) and Ithaca (2:30 p.m.) on Saturday.

Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
