AU women's tennis team ends season at state championships

ITHACA, NY -- The Alfred University women's tennis team on Saturday wrapped up its competition at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA)championship tournament.

Two AU singles players and a doubles team were eliminated Saturday from the thre-day tournament, held Friday, Saturday and today at Ithaca College.

Sophomore Griffin Currie (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) lost her first singles quarterfinal match to Skidmore's Danika Robison, 6-1, 6-1, and junior Kate Cohen (Bradford, PA/Bradford) dropped her sixth singles quarterfinal match with Skidmore's Tory Engros, 6-1, 6-1. Alfred's second doubles team of senior Holly Seidewand (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and sophomore Sarah Foster (Adelaide, Australia/Sparta, NJ) fell in the quarterfinals, losing to Ithaca's Melanie Cohen and Agata Kubik, 8-2.

Alfred ends its season with an 8-7 record (2-6 Empire 8).

Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
