AU women's basketball team announces captains

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women's basketball team has announced its captains for the 2009-10 season.

Senior forwards Libby Meier and Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey), senior guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) and junior point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) will serve as captains for the Lady Saxons.

Libby and Hannah Meier are three-year letterwinners at AU. In 25 games last year, Hannah started 16 and averaged 4.0 points and 4.0 rebounds while leading the team in blocked shots with 26. Libby also saw action in 25 games, starting 13, and averaged 3.3 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Button is also a three-year letterwinner heading into her senior campaign. She played in 25 games (15 starts) last season and averaged 4.5 points and 2.1 rebounds while dishing out 33 assists.

Murphy transferred to AU from St. John Fisher prior to last season and led the team in scoring (14.1 points per game) and assists (4.2) while pulling down 4.5 rebounds per game (third most on the team). The daughter of head coach Jay Murphy, she started all 25 games for Alfred en route to being named a First Team Empire 8 all-star.

AU will open its 2009-10 season on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. at home against Penn State-DuBois.

Athlete of the Week
Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
