AU men's tennis team earns academic honors

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s tennis team has been honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for its work in the classroom during the 2008-09 academic year.

The ITA included the AU men’s squad on its list of All-Academic Teams, Division III classification. To earn the All-Academic honor, a team must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20.

In addition, three players from the Alfred men’s team were named ITA scholar-athletes. Players named scholar-athletes must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.50 for the academic year.

Scholar-athletes for the AU men’s team were freshmen Nathan Garletts (Havertown, PA/Haverford) and seniors Tim Pruyn (North Tonwanda, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) and Alex Weller (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon).

Athlete of the Week
Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
