Alfred University’s Houghton earns Empire 8 men’s tennis honors

ALFRED, NY — Connor Houghton (Orleans, MA/Nauset Regional) a sophomore on the Alfred University men’s tennis team, has been named an Empire 8 Conference all-star.

Houghton was named to the all-conference Second Team after posting a 6-8 record in first singles (3-5 in Empire 8 play). It marks the second year Houghton has been named an Empire 8 Second Team all-star.

The Saxons ended the 2009 season with a 5-9 record (2-6 Empire 8).

Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on teams sponsored by the conference, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” Alfred’s honoree from the men’s tennis team is sophomore Ryan Parlia (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South).

Athlete of the Week
Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
