Outdoor track and field teams compete at New York State Championships5/05/09

Several AU athletes qualified to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) outdoor championships, May 14 and 15, in Springfield, MA.
Junior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) took second in the 400-meter dash (50.24 seconds) to help lead the AU men. His time of 49.90 seconds in the preliminary heats met ECAC qualifying standards.
Other AU men earning trips to the ECAC outdoor championships were: sophomore Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga), third in the shot put (14.72 meters); and senior Erik Jezek (Orchard Park, NY/Hamburg), ninth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.01 seconds; 15.47 seconds in preliminaries met ECAC standards).
AU also qualified two relays to compete at the ECAC meet. Jezek, freshman Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden), junior Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane) and freshman Anthony DeGroat (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), took fifth in the 4X100-meter relay with an ECAC qualifying time of 43.46 seconds. Consolo, Scott, Phillips and Jezek qualified in the 4X400-meter relay by taking fourth in a time of 3:25.42.
Other top performers for the AU men at the state meet were junior Travis Cox (Ashaway, RI/Westerly), fourth in the hammer throw (47.31 meters) and seventh in the discus (37.03 meters); Ross, sixth in the discus (37.24 meters); and Scott, ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (58.22 seconds).
Freshman Annie Mills (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) was the sole AU woman to earn a spot in the ECACs. She finished ninth in the 100-meter hurdles with a qualifying time of 16.09 seconds.
Junior Megan Crimmins (Horsheads, NY/Horseheads) was sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:47.78) and freshman Elisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, MA/Watertown) was 10th (5:08.00). Junior Megan McKee (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:49.98).
AU competes next on Thursday, May 7, at Roberts Wesleyan.

Athlete of the week
Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
