Saxon men’s lacrosse team falls to Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY – Host Hartwick College defeated the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team, 8-4, Saturday afternoon in Alfred’s 2009 season finale.

Hartwick (5-8, 3-5 Empire 8) led 5-1 at the half before Alfred (8-7, 1-7 Empire 8) outscored the Hawks, 3-0, in the third to pull within a goal, at 5-4. Hartwick would score the only goals of the final period to pull away with the win.

Sophomore attackman Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had two goals to pace AU. Junior midfielder Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) and freshman midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) each netted a goal and junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) added an assist.

Steve Caramello had three goals and Alex Giavinazzo had three assists for Hartwick.

Sophomore goalie Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) had a game-high 11 groundballs and made 14 saves for Alfred. Hartwick netminder John Meade made 13 saves and picked up a team-high 10 groundballs.

Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
