Ithaca handles AU women’s lacrosse team

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team dropped a 19-5 decision to visiting EmpIre 8 Conference foe Ithaca College Sunday afternoon at Merrill Field.

Ithaca (6-7, 3-4 Empire 8) led 10-3 at the half and outscored AU 9-2 after intermission. The visiting Bombers outshot Alfred, 39-14, and held a 34-17 advantage in groundballs.

Sophomore attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored four goals to lead Alfred (4-6, 1-6 Empire 8). Junior defender Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) also had a goal, and sophomore midfielder Jennifer Omilanowicz (Mexico, NY/Mexico), junior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and junior defender Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) each had an assist.

Lauren Fitzgerald had a game-high five goals to lead Ithaca. Emily Finn and Kylie McClure each had three goals and an assist.

Sophomore Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) went the distance in goal for AU, making 13 saves. Starting goalie Courtney Dowell, along with Leah Page and Heidi Puccio, combined to make five saves in net for Ithaca.

Alfred wraps up its season next Sunday, April 26, at 1 p.m. at home against Stevens.

Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.

Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
