Alfred University men’s basketball team tops host Fisher, 71-632/17/09

AU (8-15, 3-11 Empire 8) made 10 three-point shots in the game, with seven coming in the second half as the Saxons outscored Fisher, 47-39. Alfred outrebounded the bigger Cardinals, 36-35, which represented a huge a turnaround from Fisher’s 77-46 win over the Saxons in Alfred on Jan. 23, when Fisher outrebounded AU, 46-26.
The teams finished the first half of Tuesday’s contest deadlocked at 24-24. AU shot only 24 percent in the first 20 minutes, but made three three-pointers while holding Fisher (eight of 19 shooting) to only one long-range field goal.
Junior guard Bobby Barry (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) and senior forward Carl Embury (Perry, NY/Perry) did most of the damage from outside for the Saxons. Barry made six of 11 shots from the floor (four of eight on three-pointers) to finish with a game-high 22 points to go with six rebounds. Embury netted 18 points on six-of-10 shooting (four of six on three-pointers) and pulled down eight rebounds.
Junior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) had 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had seven assists and three steals.
Mike Wopperer led Fisher (15-8, 7-7 Empire 8) with 14 points and six rebounds. Ozell Franklin added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. at home against Hartwick. The Saxons wrap up the season with a home game against Utica at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

Athlete of the week
Tyler Olsen The junior from Saratoga Springs, NY, won two individual races and swam on two winning relays in the men’s swimming and diving team’s win at Fredonia. Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays.
Hannah Meier The senior forward from Rochester, NY, netted a team-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals as the women’s basketball team opened the season with am 81-42 victory over visiting Penn State-Dubois.
